My Music Is Not To Gain Recognition - Femi Kuti

Afrobeat star, Femi Kuti, has stated that he has not gone into music to gain recognition and awards.

Speaking in a recent Interview, he said his music career was nurtured to fight for the masses just like his father, Fela Futi.

“My career did not start with wanting to win the Grammy. I believe if my career was based on winning the Grammy, I would have won the Grammy.” He said.

The 55-year-old said rather than individual accolades, his mission, he said, is to fight for the people.

“The way I started to learn music was to fight for electricity, good education, injustice, corruption, to use my music as a platform to fight for the underprivileged,” he added.

Femi has been nominated in the world music category at the Grammy in 2003, 2010, 2012 and 2013 but has yet to win it.

With the Felabration in honour of his late father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, kicking off on Monday, Femi commended his sister, Yeni Kuti, for the remarkable success she has achieved with the annual music festival.
