Buhari's Regime!!! Nigerian Companies That Have Defied Recession

Despite the economic recession and downturn of business activities, businesses that have become household names have found a way to stem the tides and retain their position in troubling times.

These companies have shown that they have become giant brands because of hard work, ingenuity and innovative mindset. These traits undoubtedly kept their heads above the waters, when their contemporaries were struggling to survive or worse still, phase out of the competition.

Recently, the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) conferred ‘Brand of The Year’ Award to Nigeria’s leading noodles brand, INDOMIE Instant noodles at the just concluded LCCI Commerce and Industry Awards 2017, which took place at the Oriental Hotel, Lagos.

According to report, the yearly award is to recognize, promote and celebrate private and public institutions operating in Nigeria for best business practices, growth through innovations, business sustainability and positive impact on the people and society.

Receiving the award on behalf of Indomie, Group Head, Public Relations, Dufil Prima Foods Plc, Ashiwaju Temitope, thanked the organizers of the award, saying it was an honour to be recognized as the Brand of the Year.

Similarly, Chi Limited was also recognised as the ‘Most Innovative Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) Company’ at the Businessday Top 25 Most Innovative companies and Institutions in Nigeria Awards 2017.

Chi Limited reportedly came top, in a fiercely competitive category that included other major FMCG companies like AJE, makers of BIG Cola and Dufil foods, makers of Indomie Instant Noodles.

According to the Businessday award committee, ‘Chi Limited’s visionary stride in innovating and launching a portfolio of new and existing brands into the consumer market including Chivita 100%, Chivita Active Vegetable & Fruit Nectar, Happy Hour by Chivita Fruit Drink, Hollandia Evaporated Milk, Hollandia Yoghurt and others provide ground-breaking innovations that have resulted, in no small measure, in making commercial and socio-economic impact, as well as value creation for clients and consumers’’.

The juice brand somehow managed to launch more lines of products in a time that companies were streamlining their products to their best category, in order to concentrate on their best profitable line of products while cutting costs.

Intelligence and creativity will always be rewarded as one of the leading telecommunications services provider, Airtel Nigeria, was also recognized at the African Cristal Festival, held in Morocco in May 2017.

The African Cristal Festival is widely considered as a foremost platform to reward the best advertising campaigns created and broadcasted over the African continent, on any media.

Airtel’s commercial ‘Data is Life’  was recognised for its role in pioneering creativity and innovation across the African continent as it emerged treble winners, recently, at the prestigious African Cristal Festival.

The award winning commercial, ‘Data is Life’, created to drive the telco’s SmartSpeedoo mobile Internet value offering, placed Nigeria on the continental creativity and innovation map, with the haul of three awards in the categories of African Cristal Awards Film for the ‘Moments’ TVC and two regional categories of Nigerian Cristal Awards: Film – ‘Moments’ and Integrated.

Airtel’s triumph at the African Cristal Festival, reportedly came barely two months after the company’s nomination at the just concluded Dubai Lynx International Festival for ‘Alex & Joe’, a different television commercial also focused on the telco’s mobile Internet value offering.

The past few years have not been easy on any industry, but it is commendable to see that while some are going under, some others have leveraged on the hard times to sharpen their minds for creative and innovative ways to stay afloat despite the recession.
